Q Grader Course Structure and Learning Outcomes

6-day intensive program held in California that integrates theoretical instruction, hands-on exercises, and certification exams to validate your expertise at the industry’s highest standard.

What You'll Master with Q Grader

Upon completing this course, you will have the ability to:

Command the Coffee Value Assessment (CVA): Articulate the core theoretical principles of the CVA and provide strategic guidance on its professional application across diverse contexts.

Execute Complete Coffee Evaluations: Precisely perform the system’s four essential assessments to develop a full-spectrum profile of any coffee:

Physical Evaluation: Examine green coffee to determine color classification, moisture content, bean sizing, and defect identification.
Descriptive Evaluation: Chart the sensory landscape, accurately pinpointing aromatic characteristics, flavor notes, and textural qualities.
Affective Evaluation: Assess coffee quality and market potential beyond personal preference, modeling the expectations of specific consumer segments.
Extrinsic Evaluation: Capture the value-adding “story” attributes including geographical origin, producer narrative, certifications, and sustainable practices.

Analyze Through Multiple Lenses: Develop heightened self-awareness to separate subjective taste from objective evaluation, recognizing how a coffee’s value shifts across different clientele and market segments.

The curriculum unfolds across 6 intensive days, each focused on distinct modules and skill assessments. Every day we start at 8:30am finish ~4pm.

I recently took the Q Grader course at Boot Coffee Campus with Valerian Hrala and had an amazing experience. Since the class was small with only eight participants, we each received valuable one-on-one time with Valerian to work through topics we were struggling with. Despite the grueling nature of the course, Valerian and his assistant made the material approachable and easy to comprehend. I highly recommend this course to anyone interested in pursuing their Q certification. Having passed and received my license, I can confidently say it was well worth the investment of time and money. I look forward to reconnecting with the group when it comes time to recalibrate!

I was a student with Valerian Hrala for the SCA Sensory Skills Foundation, SCA Sensory Skills Intermediate, SCA Q Grader, and coffee business course. I give my fullest recommendation for Valerian as an instructor to students who are passionate about coffee, care deeply about people, and value learning in a respectful, collaborative, and welcoming environment. I entrust Valerian with furthering my coffee education firstly for his generosity with sharing his deep knowledge and experience. Coffee is a complicated subject, and having a professional guide and train your skillset is an invaluable asset. A skilled and passionate teacher, Valerian explains important ideas with clarity and emphasis, taking the time to use different teaching modalities to assist all types of learners understand and internalize important lessons. Valerian prepares and teaches with great detail and intention. As a student, you will find countless instances where his exceptional dedication and care enrich a routine exercise into a memorable learning experience. For example, to teach us how to identify roast defects, Valerian roasted cofffees himself to the standard of the SCA definition, as he found that to be higher fidelity than ready- made demonstration kits. In sensory development and olfactory description, he taught us a framework for communicating and categorizing scents and supplemented the Le Nez du Cafe kit with many other interesting scents to expand our ability to discern a wide variety of fragrances. I felt deeply moved by his dedication and commitment to our growth and success. Valerian is also a great resource for entrepreneurs establishing a coffee business. In the business course, he shares hard-earned practical advice and experience while encouraging students to exercise their creativity and individuality in their product, packaging, and marketing. I regard his mentorship as a worthwhile time and cost-saving investment, and I would recommend it to those who are serious about pursuing a successful venture in this field. Beyond that, Valerian is also a fantastic person to be around. He is approachable, honest, and humorous. In moments when student’s experience tension, fatigue, or fixation, he is a person that will give perspective and encouragement. As a result, class is always a joyful event, regardless how challenging the schedule or exercise may feel. I am grateful to find a gathering place for individuals who love both people and coffee. Valerian brings out the best of you, and you will have a great experience learning from him. I depart each course with a greater appreciation for my craft and peers, and I am sure you will too.

Usually people only write reviews when they have a really bad experience or a really good one. For me, taking classes with Valerian was such a good experience that I genuinely wanted to share it with others. I took my first roasting class with Valerian when I knew absolutely nothing about coffee. I came in as a blank paper, and today I have my own roasting business. I feel incredibly lucky to have learned from one of the best. Valerian is incredibly patient, never makes you feel dumb for asking questions, and somehow explains coffee in a way that just clicks. Things that felt intimidating at first became fun and exciting to learn about. I later came back to take the Q Grader course with him for the new CVA exams. I’ve heard so many people say the Q Grader is extremely difficult and stressful, so I was honestly nervous going into it. But Valerian made the whole experience surprisingly enjoyable and memorable. The course was organized so well, and every lesson built naturally into the next. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, I actually found myself really enjoying the process. The Q Grader course was honestly one of the best classes I’ve ever taken. I cannot recommend Valerian enough, whether you are completely new to coffee or looking to deepen your professional knowledge.

I recently completed the new version of the Q Grader course by the Specialty Coffee Association, and it was an unforgettable experience. Before taking this course, I practiced cupping and Le Nez du Café at home, but during the course I learned how to evaluate coffee much more precisely and systematically. Triangulation was especially challenging for me at first 😱 but through the guidance and patient instruction from Valerian, I gradually gained confidence and understanding. The instruction style was supportive, detailed, and encouraging, which matched my learning style very well. Even though the course was intense and sometimes stressful, the class atmosphere felt warm and positive throughout the week. I would recommend this course to anyone serious about developing professional sensory skills in coffee. It is challenging, but incredibly rewarding. Now that I have my Q Grader certification, I hope to use these skills for my specialty coffee importing business focused on Panamanian coffee, and continue growing in the coffee industry. Thank you again, Valerian, for your kindness, guidance, and support throughout the course!

I took the Q grader course at Boot Coffee Campus and I loved it! I learned a lot from these great and knowledgeable instructors. I'm a bad test taker, I have high anxiety when taking test and I really felt supported by Willem & Valerian. It feels like they're invested in your success!

I visited Boot Coffee after reading the 'Monk of Mokha' and was instantly convinced that I need to take a few courses here. I have taken Sensory, Roasting Biz, and Q grader courses with them. Valerian, the course director, has a wealth of knowledge from his roasting businesses and happily shares it through his teachings. He cares for the progress of all students and is completely invested in our success. For the Q, Willem has been teaching the course since years and he does a great job at calming the nerves. The Q course is a stressful 6 days but both Valerian and Willem are there for you throughout the process. Overall, I would definitely recommend taking courses with Boot and if you are giving the Q exam, would urge you to take the sensory courses as they help immensely for the Q course.

I took the Q Arabica Grader Combo Course and to just say that I learned so much would be a complete understatement. An eye opening and transformative experience. Not for the weak of heart or mind. Happy to say I earned the title of Licensed Q Grader with the very best in the game. Thank you to Willem, Valerian and Josh for helping me on my way to becoming the coffee professional that I dream and strive to become. 10/10!

My business partner & I wanted to learn more about the coffee from bean to cup. or in some ways.. beyond the cup. We felt gated from industry knowledge so finding Boot Coffee was a dream come true. We ended up taking the Sensory Basics, Sensory Intermediate and the Q Grader Course and Exam. MANY positive things to say. Marcus Young taught all the Sensory courses and Willem Boot lead the Q Grader Course and Exam. Both the Instructors were super knowledgeable and did their best to make content engaging and applicable. There's no question that both are some of the leading experts in the industry. One of our favorite faces we got to see every day was the Campus Director, Valerian. He was very welcoming, super knowledgable, and really cared about our ability to understand the materials. He was our guardian angel and greatest support system. We can't wait to take more classes with Boot Coffee Campus!!

Preparing for Success

We strongly recommend taking the SCA Sensory Foundations and Intermediate courses OR the Q Grader Accelerator course before attempting the SCA Q Grader certification. While we cannot guarantee passing, we’ve had great success with this combination in the past, significantly increasing the passing rate of our students. The foundational sensory training provides essential skills that make the demanding Q Grader exams more manageable and helps you feel confident throughout the testing process. As a Q Grader participant, you’ll receive a discounted price on our Sensory courses, making this preparation pathway both accessible and valuable for your certification journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I do not pass everything the first time?

Not passing one assessment does not mean you have to repeat the entire SCA Q Grader course. Some exams can be retaken during the same course, giving you another opportunity after additional practice and coaching. If you still have an exam outstanding after the course, you can generally retake only the exam you still need to pass at another authorized SCA Q Grader course or retake session. That can be at Boot Coffee or at another approved location anywhere in the world, subject to current SCA rules and availability. And if you read the reviews of our courses, you already know how seriously we take your success. We know you are investing significant time, money, travel, focus, and energy into becoming a Q Grader. We do not take that lightly. We will do everything in our power to coach you, support you, give you useful feedback, and help you walk into each exam as prepared and confident as possible. That is also why we created the Q Grader Accelerator: a focused preparation program built around the areas candidates most often find challenging, so you can start the SCA Q Grader course with more practice and more confidence. Our goal is simple: give you the strongest possible chance to succeed.

What is Q Grader Accelerator

Q Grader Accelerator is a four-day preparation course designed to help you enter the SCA Q Grader course with confidence. Based on more than 60 Q Grader courses delivered over the past 15 years, it focuses on the exams candidates most often find challenging: green coffee grading, olfactory and roast identification, triangulation, and taste modalities. Each day is practical and focused. You practice the exam formats, learn what to pay attention to, identify weak areas, and build confidence before the Q Grader course begins. Q Grader Accelerator runs only until approximately 2:00 PM each day, giving you intensive preparation without exhausting your palate or concentration before Q Grader. It is not required, but it is strongly recommended for first-time Q Grader candidates or anyone who wants to arrive better prepared. If you purchase Q Grader Accelerator together with an upcoming SCA Q Grader course at Boot Coffee, you receive $500 off the combined registration.

Who should take the SCA Q Grader course?

The course is ideal for roasters, green coffee buyers, producers, quality-control professionals, trainers, baristas, and serious coffee professionals who want to take their sensory skills to the next level. You do not need to be a sensory superstar before you arrive. You should have some cupping experience and a genuine interest in becoming better at evaluating coffee.

Do I need to be an expert before taking the course?

No. The SCA Q Grader course is designed to train, calibrate, and challenge you throughout the week. Many students arrive feeling unsure about certain sensory exercises and become significantly more confident as the course progresses. The important thing is to come curious, focused, and ready to practice.

What if I am nervous about the exams?

That is completely normal. You will practice the skills and formats throughout the course, and our instructors will coach you along the way. The goal is not simply to put exams in front of you. It is to help you understand what you are doing and become more confident doing it. If you want additional preparation before the course begins, we also offer the Q Grader Accelerator.

What makes taking the SCA Q Grader course at Boot Coffee different?

Experience. Boot Coffee has delivered more than 60 Q Grader courses over the past 15 years. We have worked with students from around the world and have seen where people improve quickly, where they tend to hesitate, and where good coaching makes a real difference. We take the course seriously, but we also want you to enjoy the process. Expect a lot of coffee, a lot of tasting, a lot of learning, and a group of people who are just as obsessed with coffee as you are. Please check our reviews on Google and Trustpilot.

Will I become a better cupper?

That is one of the biggest reasons to take the course. Regardless of your starting point, spending several days intensely evaluating coffee, comparing your perceptions with others, and receiving structured feedback can dramatically sharpen the way you taste and think about coffee.
