2 Day Business Course for future coffee shop owners

How to start a coffee shop

From coffee cart to a award winning specialty cafè

The course covers all the essential components necessary to open your own coffee shop. It starts with sharpening your concept and analyzing the marketplace and your target customer base. Financial planning, finding the right location, building a team that aligns with your company values, and sustainable business practices are also key topics addressed in the course.

Before diving into the course content, there is a pre-class survey to gather some initial information. The survey is completed via Google Forms, and participants are provided with a link to access it.

Next, a thought experiment is conducted using different scenarios related to revenue, operating hours, percentage of sales from different items, and rental costs. Participants are asked to choose the scenario they prefer for further discussion.

The course aims to guide participants through the process of opening a coffee shop, helping them understand, think about, and discuss each step involved. It emphasizes the challenges and considerations unique to the coffee industry while also exploring ways to add value to the customer experience and differentiate their concept.

Participants learn about the specialty coffee market's growth, projected market size, and the definition of a specialty coffee shop. The course also delves into common mistakes made in the industry and provides insights on ingredients for success, including hard work, understanding the numbers, organization, integrity, dreaming big, and empathizing with customers.

The components for opening a new cafe are divided into different phases: idea, plan, execution. Under the idea phase, participants are encouraged to dream and define what they care about, the goals for their business, and the feel they want to create when customers enter their cafe. The plan phase focuses on product/service description, target market, vision/mission/values, market research, unique value proposition, marketing strategy, organizational structure, project timeline, and financial projections.

Financial planning and projections are given significant attention, including the importance of controlling costs, estimating capital needed, breakeven analysis, and sustaining success. The course also emphasizes the need to conduct a feasibility analysis to assess the viability of the business concept.

Finally, the execution phase covers finding the right location, negotiating leases, navigating regulations, managing construction, developing operations and menus, building a team, and establishing the brand.

The course provides aspiring coffee shop owners with a comprehensive guide to opening their own cafe, helping them navigate the complexities of the industry and develop a solid foundation for a successful venture.
