SCA COFFEE SKILLS – FUNDAMENTALS OF SPECIALTY COFFEE

The perfect course for those new to specialty coffee; coffee professionals looking to explore all of coffee’s career paths; and business owners, general managers, and entrepreneurs looking to improve their coffee business. You will learn about the foundations of coffee quality from the farm, understanding the key requirements of coffee sensory evaluation, spend time roasting coffee, brewing coffee, and preparing espresso and common bar drinks. Students gain valuable hands-on experience in key roles of coffee business operations – barista, roaster, trainer, and quality control.
Upon completion of the course and after passing the in-class exams, students will receive an SCA Certificate in Introduction to Coffee, Barista Foundations, Roasting Foundations, and Sensory Foundations – and earn 25 points towards their SCA Coffee Skills Diploma. (Read More)

INTRODUCTION TO COFFEE

This intensive day of coffee education provides students with a comprehensive overview of the entire supply chain of coffee; from the seed to the brewed cup and is the back. This is a SCA Coffee Skills Program course and is the most comprehensive 1-day course one can take in the industry. In Introduction to Coffee students develop a common verbal and sensory vocabulary that forms the backbone of the Roaster, Coffee Sensory Skills, Brewing, Barista Skills, and Green Coffee Programs. Students learn to cup coffees, brew expertly while exploring the fundamental elements of extraction, and the myriad impacts to coffee quality starting at the farm.

SENSORY SKILLS FOUNDATIONS

A perfect introduction to sensory analysis and sensory skills. Students explore specialty vs non-specialty coffee, recognize the core concepts of sensory analysis, and explain why and how coffee professionals use it in the coffee industry with a focus on objectively identifying, describing, and discriminating aroma, taste, and body in coffees. Students are introduced to the SCA cupping protocol and methodology.

ROASTING FOUNDATIONS

This one-day course is suitable for beginning, professional, and hobbyist roasters and is a solid introduction to roasting, both from a theoretical as well as from a practical point of view. Roasting Foundations provides a basic understanding of the roasting process, including the roast cycle and how to control sensory aspects of the coffee by roasting light or dark. Students earn 5 points in the SCA Coffee Skills Program towards their Coffee Skills Diploma.

Roasting Foundations (1 day introductory course): provides a basic understanding of the roasting process, including the different phases of the roasting cycle and how to manipulate sensory attributes of the coffee by varying the roasting degree.
Gain valuable roasting techniques and hands on experience roasting coffees with three different profiles, improve your tasting skills, and earn points towards an SCA Coffee Skills Diploma! This one-day course is suitable for beginning professionals  and hobbyists. Roasters who want to expand their coffee horizon with new concepts about roasting practices and tasting protocols can bundle Foundations with Intermediate Coffee Roasting.
Students will take the SCA Foundations Roasting exam. Upon completion of course work and passing the exams, students earn 5 points towards the SCA Coffee Skills Diploma.

BARISTA FOUNDATIONS
